The diversity of listening by Diane Schuh and Paul Goutmann (SOIL project) Soil is often seen as a surface, a building support or a resource. In urban environments, soils are perceived as places of circulation or supports for human constructions. However, they are home to an unknown biodiversity that it is important to recognize and value. During this mini-conference Paul Goutmann and Diane Schuh, research and composition of soil, will present the musical, sensitive and qualitative approach to soil developed within the SOIL project. He and she will explain their approach and will listen, on a device of 4 speakers, sound recordings that make the sound space of the ground and the acoustic diversity of the garden of MSH Paris Nord heard.Diane Schuh is a researcher, composer and landscape designer. Doctor in aesthetics, arts sciences and technologies, music specialty (University of Paris 8), and holder of the State Diploma of landscape designer (D.P.L.G., ENSP Versailles), she designs devices and protocols of attention to living, mobilising listening and musical composition.Paul Goutmann is an artist-researcher and teacher in musical computer science at the Université Paris 8. with Rebecca Marchesseau and autistic people -subject- (participatory project Ecoute et autisme) In 2025, the Centre de Ressources Autisme Ile de France, in collaboration with the researcher, composer and landscape artist Diane Schuh, organizes a series of immersive workshops in the garden of the Maison des Sciences Humaines et sociales Paris Nord. In these workshops, any person with autism without intellectual disability is invited to develop their sensitivity to life, whether it be plant, animal or human. Participants learn to listen to musical soundscapes and use appropriate tools, such as BBDMI sensors, to compose by gesture. Concert in the garden A dematerialized approach to sound spatialization by Arnau Gran i Romero The device proposed during this session is based on the reuse of smartphones as a set of autonomous units for broadcasting, spatialization and real-time sound transformation.
